Ms. Hezel 

Hello Murray friends and family! I am so excited to become a part of this community in my first year of teaching! My name is Maddy Hezel (Hee-zuhl) and I’ll be teaching 8th grade Physical Science and Astronomy, a semester-long elective. 

I spent the last 5 years in college at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, just down the road! In my first 4 years, I majored in Biology, Society, and Environment, learning about the natural world and many of its human-made, “un-natural” parts. If they’d let me, I think I’d keep taking classes forever, I love learning! After I graduated with my bachelor’s degree, I started my Masters of Education in Secondary Science Teaching. Although my philosophy on education is not brief, I will simply say: Science is a tool that can be used by anyone. My job is showing students their capabilities and helping them grow that ever-important critical-thinking muscle. Luckily for me, science happens to be super fun and infinitely interesting! 

Before college, I lived in southern Illinois near St. Louis, Missouri with my mom and our dogs. My own K-12 experience was a lot different, mostly because I lived in the woods and my school was surrounded on four sides by cornfields. Sometimes I miss the quiet,  but I am immensely thankful that 17-year-old me made the decision to move to the Twin Cities and I cannot imagine leaving (except for an adventure or two!)
