Study Skills Syllabus
Ms. Weghorst, Room 1209 2008 – 2009 School Year Class Description: This class will focus on learning and practicing skills that can be used in all subject areas. Study Skills teaches skills, concepts, and behaviors that enable students to be more successful. The goal of this course is that each student will become organized, responsible, accountable, and actively involved in his or her learning. Classroom Components: · Self advocacy lessons where students understand their IEPs, identify their learning needs, and advocate for themselves in their classes · Organizational strategies established and maintained · Activities to improve work completion · Lessons on specific study skills such as test taking, note taking, and researching · Individualized instruction to develop core skills in reading, writing, and math · Develop life skills for getting along with others, managing conflict and frustration, and improving self esteem · Support with mainstream assignments For more information, please see attached Study Skills Standards. Both teacher and students will stay Above the Line: Responsible, Respectful, Productive, Cooperative, Safe, and Kind. Attendance · You (not me!) are responsible for getting your make-up work from ALL of your teachers when you are absent. Use the student portal to keep track of assignments. · Be on time and ready to learn when the bell rings. Materials· Binder (provided) · Planner · Work from other classes · Book to read · Pen/pencil and paper *All materials need to be brought every day!! Staff Desk and Materials· Staff desk area is off-limits. · Ask permission to use materials, use them respectfully, and return them when you are finished. School Rules· Rules in the Student Handbook apply to this classroom. · This is an Above the Line classroom. Everyone is expected to be Respectful, Responsible, Safe, Cooperative, Kind, and Productive. Homework · Students will keep track of daily assignments from all classes in their student planner. It will be checked in this class. GradingGrades are based on the following areas that are evaluated by daily performance and behavior: · Participating in and completing daily assignments, tasks, and projects · Coming prepared with all materials · Maintaining Planner (including keeping track of assignments, tests, etc.) · Being productive · Following rules and directions · Making progress towards your goals
