Volunteering at Murray
Gen Nakanishi
Gen Nakanishi
Hello, I am Gen Nakanishi, Volunteer Coordinator.

Prior to coming Murray I spent 20 years doing coordination of personnel and project management in the business world. Before that I raised my family and have 2 adult children who graduated from Murray.  I began my professional life as an elementary school teacher and doing inservices for teachers in science curriculum. Now, I am thrilled to be here working with parents, guardians and the community to bring your expertise and support to Murray.

Our volunteer program is entitled "Mighty Valuable Person" and that is exactly what each and every volunteer is. We have a number of special opportunities at Murray Junior High School for you to help out here at school. Since many activities are scheduled when many parents are working, retirees are wonderful resources for us.

Whether you are a parent, a guardian, a grandparent or a member of the community your skills and time will be greatly appreciated and utilized. To help with one of our activities or for more information please contact Gen Nakanishi at gen.nakanishi@spps.org; Phone: 651-293-8740 ext. 1012

Special Opportunities to Volunteer:

Tutoring Math for one hour during the day once a week.

Scheduling conferences starting October 1st (mornings). We use 2 to 3 people a day for 2 weeks to schedule conferences (over 3000 times are scheduled each trimester) and get forms returned to households in a timely manner.

Also: Accompanying Field Trips-Daytime usually mornings.

Science Fair at Murray Jr. High (Click for dates, times and information)

We have a special opportunity for parents and members of the community at Murray interested in fostering the inquisitive and the scientific process in students. Each year our Science Fair is held for the 7th and 8th graders.  This is the largest Junior High Science Fair in the Twin Cities.  We provide orientation on the criteria and all the materials you will need to work with our students.

History Day - February 26th - 2008
Do you want to enhance the scholarship and effectiveness of our student's efforts?  Murray students, either individually or in teams, research and prepare a history project that is judged on historical quality and depth.  This is a juried event.  You'll work with the BEST of the Best.
