7th Grade American History
The course work of American History involves the study of the social, political, and economic development of the United States from Pre-Civil War America through the present day. The content allows the students to understand historical events and the roles of individuals within them. The three-trimester course is divided into three sections of study. Each trimester will cover the following topics and large assignments:
* Fall - The focus is on Pre-Civil War America through the turn of the 20th Century. There will be an five part essay writing assignment during this trimester.
* Winter - The era beginning with World War I through the end of World War II. Students will research and complete a History Day project.
* Spring - Post World War II America all the way up to the current events of today. Students will have an interview assingment to complete before the end of the trimester.
Each student will participate in History Day as part of the course requirement for the winter trimester. Students, who do well in our school History Day fair in late February, will advance on to the regional competition, and possible advance on to state and national events.
Major key knowledge and applications students will be exposed to in this course are:
1. Comprehend and analyze historical events through multiple perspectives.
2. Investigate key themes in American History, such as: freedom, human rights, migration, and transportation as they apply to all people living in the United States.
3. Understand the sequence of major events in American History.
4. Recognize and appreciate the roles individuals from all cultural backgrounds have played in the development of the United States.
5. Analyze and interpret the causes and effects of various events throughout American History.
6. Compare and contrast the changing role of community participation throughout American History.
7. Interpret and convey both historical information and current issues through timelines, political cartoons, posters, charts, graphs, maps, and photographs.
Students are expected to come to class prepared daily. This includes bring to class classroom materials they are responsible to bring. These items are:
pencil or pen for assignments and note taking
notebook or binder with paper
color pencils when needed to complete map work or projects
textbooks that are assigned by the History teacher
daily planner to log assignments and use materials found in its reference section
materials for projects such as History Day or other class projects
COURSE EXPECTATIONS:
Students are expect to be respectful to their peers and teachers at all times in class. Planners are necessary to receive a pass to leave the classroom.
All students are held responsible for assignments and are expected to turn in all work on time to receive full credit. When a student is absent it is their responsibility to ask the teacher when they return to ask for and collect any missed work or assignments.
